When you receive new eyeglasses, taking proper care of them is essential to ensure their longevity and maintain clear vision. With the right cleaning and maintenance habits, your glasses can stay in excellent condition for years. 

Cleaning Eyeglasses

Proper cleaning helps prevent scratches, smudges, and damage to coatings on your lenses. 

Do:

1. Wash and dry your hands
Before touching your glasses, make sure your hands are dry, clean, and free of lotions or dirt.
2. Rinse your glasses with lukewarm water
This removes dust and debris that could scratch your lenses when wiped.
3. Apply a small amount of lotion-free dishwashing liquid
Place a drop on each lens and gently rub it around the lenses and frame. Avoid soaps with moisturizers or harsh chemicals.
4. Rinse again thoroughly
Make sure all soap residue is removed.
5. Dry with a microfiber cloth or lint-free towel 
Avoid using tissues, paper towels, or clothing, which can scratch the lenses.

Don’t:

1. Use hot water, which can damage lens coatings.
2. Use household cleaners like window sprays, bleach, or ammonia.
3. Wipe dry lenses without rinsing, as trapped dust can cause scratches.
4. Use rough fabrics or towels that can leave fibers or scratches.

Maintenance Eyeglasses

Regular maintenance ensures your frames stay sturdy, comfortable, and properly aligned.

Do:

1. Store glasses in a protective case when not in use.
Always place your glasses in a hard or padded case when not in use. This prevents accidental drops, scratches, or warping.
2. Tighten loose screws with a small eyeglass screwdriver.
Over time, screws on the hinges may loosen. Use a small eyeglass screwdriver to gently tighten them before they fall out.
3. Clean nose pads and earpieces regularly to prevent buildup of oils and dirt.
Oils, sweat, and dirt can build up on the parts that touch your skin. Wipe them with a damp cloth or mild soap solution to prevent discoloration and skin irritation.
4. Visit your optician for adjustments if frames become severely misaligned or bent.
If the frame becomes severely deformed or bent. Professional adjustment can restore a comfortable fit and prevent further damage. 

Don’t:

1. Place glasses lens-down on surfaces.
This is a common cause of scratches.
2. Leave them in hot cars or direct sunlight for long periods.
Heat can warp frames and damage coatings.
3. Bend or twist frames forcefully.
It can break hinges or distort the shape.
4. Attempt complex repairs yourself
Fixes for broken hinges or bent frames may worsen damage.
